Former ALTA president passes away at 86

Former American Land Title Association (ALTA) president Clarence “Mac” McConville recently passed away at the age of 86.

McConville served as ALTA’s president in 1977-78 and then served as ALTA treasurer from 1979 to 1981. He was named an honorary member of the association.

McConville certainly imbedded himself into the title insurance industry over a 45-year career. He started at Minnesota Title as a part-time junior abstracter in 1947 and then started ascending up the ladder — to assistant secretary in 1950, assistant vice president in 1952, vice president in 1955 and then president and chief executive officer in 1971 until 1988. When Minnesota Title was acquired by Old Republic in 1978, McConville briefly served as a senior vice president in 1978.

On top of all that, McConville was a past president of the Minnesota Land Title Association (1961-62) and the National Title Underwriters Association. He also was named an honorary member of MLTA.

Prior to his life in title, in 1943, McConville joined the Navy, serving on an aircraft carrier for 10 months. After obtaining his law degree from the University of Minnesota, the rest is history.

McConville is survived by his spouse of 58 years, Gloria, four children, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
