A website called WalletHub has determined the safest states in America by comparing 52 key safety indicators grouped into five different categories, including assaults per capita, unemployment rates and total loss amounts from climate disasters.
WalletHub’s analysis determined that Minnesota was the safest state, followed by Vermont, Maine, Utah and Connecticut.
“With every new headline about a mass shooting, terrorist attack, hate crime or natural disaster, many of us fear for our safety and that of our loved ones,” the website stated. “Safety is a basic human need. We require some form of it, such as personal and financial protection, in every part of daily life. But we’re likely to feel more secure in some states than in others.”
According to the report, Massachusetts had the fewest traffic fatalities per miles of travel, South Carolina had the most; New Jersey had the most law enforcement employees per capita, Washington had the fewest; and Maine had the fewest assaults per capita, New Mexico and Alaska had the most.
Overall, WalletHub determined that Mississippi was the least safe state, followed by Louisiana, Florida, Arkansas and Texas.
